Vitelline vein

In the embryo, either of a pair of veins that return blood to the developing heart from the yolk sac. These veins run inside the yolk stalk, alongside the foregut, through the septum transversum, and into the sinus venosus of the heart. The liver eventually forms around the vitelline veins, coopting them into the portal vein, the hepatic sinusoids, and the hepatic veins.
