An infection in which the initial site is skin or soft tissue. This may occur in adults or children and it is readily transmitted from person to person. Typically there is a history of a minor, usually nonpenetrating, local trauma that within the next 1 to 3 days develops into the usual toxic shock syndrome (TSS) caused by a toxin elaborated by certain strains of Staphylococcus aureus.
