A measure of the effect that a specific dose of radiation has on human cells. It is expressed numerically as the product of the radiation absorbed dose (rad) and a quality factor (QF) specific for the type of radiation. The SI unit equivalent to the rem is the sievert (Sv). One rem is equal to 0.01 sievert.
