Extrapleural pneumothorax

The formation of a pneumothorax by introducing air into the space between the pleura and the inside of the rib cage.

The lung collapses when the pleural membrane is removed from the chest wall and gas is introduced into the created space. This procedure was done in situations where artificial pneumothorax wasn’t feasible. However, it became less common due to the increased risk of secondary infections and the spread of the disease to the extrapleural space. With the advent of antibiotics to control secondary infections, there’s been a resurgence in this surgical method.
