Photomultiplier tube

In radiography, an electronic vacuum tube designed to convert light photons into electrical pulses. It is used to digitize incoming light photons prior to the creation of computerized images in nuclear medicine and other imaging modalities.

An electron tube is employed to amplify the radiographic image of faint intensity that is visible on a fluorescent screen. In this process, known as image intensification, the photomultiplier tube significantly enhances the brightness of the image by several hundredfold.
