Acute pain affecting the large joints (e.g., the ankles, elbows, knees, and/or shoulders) of those infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). Its cause is not clearly defined, but HIV infection of the joints is thought to be one explanation.
