Neonatal abstinence syndrome

The adverse consequences in the newborn of exposure to addictive or dangerous intoxicants during fetal development. The consequences include, but are not limited to, preterm delivery, intrauterine growth retardation, asphyxia, low birth weight, and behavioral, psychiatric, and learning disabilities later in life.


Drug withdrawal that occurs in newborn infants whose mothers were frequent drug users while pregnant.
