Depot injection

Parenteral administration of a long-acting medication or hormone.

A method of administering medication through an injection into the muscles, designed to gradually and consistently deliver the active components of the drug into the circulatory system. The rate at which the drug is released is intentionally decelerated by incorporating substances like oil or wax, enabling it to maintain its effects over extended periods ranging from hours to days or even weeks.

The utilization of depot injections proves beneficial for patients who might struggle with proper medication adherence. Additionally, it eliminates the need for administering a series of frequent injections within a short timeframe. Depot injections find application in the delivery of various drugs, such as hormonal contraceptives, corticosteroids, and antipsychotics. However, it is important to note that uneven release of the drug into the bloodstream can potentially lead to side effects.
