Bispectral index

An electroencephalographic measure of the effect of sedative and hypnotic drugs on an anesthetized patient. It is used to determine the level of central nervous system (CNS) depression. The index ranges from zero (completely unresponsive to stimulation) to 100 (awake and alert). At levels below 60, most patients are adequately sedated for surgery.
