An intermediate filament found only in astrocytes and astroglial cells. It forms part of the skeletal structure of neurons. Abnormalities in GFAP are found in a variety of neurological diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, Creutzfeldt- Jakob disease, and some brain tumors.
