Artificial eye

A prosthesis for placement in the orbit of an individual whose eye has been removed.

An artificial eye, known as a prosthesis, is utilized to replace a surgically removed natural eye. The purpose of wearing an artificial eye is purely for cosmetic and psychological reasons. It is designed to fit smoothly behind the eyelids, taking the place of the missing natural eye. To create some degree of movement for the artificial eye, the surgeon may attach the muscles responsible for eye movement to either the remaining conjunctival membrane or to a plastic implant positioned within the eye socket. This allows for a more natural appearance and contributes to the emotional well-being of the individual.

Artificial eyes, commonly referred to as “glass eyes,” were originally made from glass. However, modern advancements have led to the use of easily moldable plastic materials for their construction.
