A disease of small blood vessels in which calcium is deposited within the medial layer of the vessel wall. Gangrenous changes occur in organs that rely on blood flow through the affected vessels, especially in the skin and in internal organs. The disease is usually found in patients with end-stage renal disease on hemodialysis but may occasionally occur in other patients.
