The region of the embryo that proliferates rapidly, producing mesoderm cells that spread outward between the layers of ectoderm and endoderm.
In embryology, the initial band of cells from which the embryo begins to develop. These cells are at the caudal end of the embryonic disk. It is present at about 15 days after fertilization.
