A synthetic female sex hormone that is used to treat menstrual disorders and in oral contraceptives. It is administered by mouth, usually in combination with an estrogen. Side-effects can include nausea, vomiting, headache, breast swelling, weight gain, fluid retention, and breakthrough bleeding.
