A condition of marked anxiety about the condition of one’s heart and circulatory system. This is accompanied by a heightened consciousness of 1 heartbeat and respiration, which in turn is worsened by the anxiety it induces. Treatment is commonly with reassurance and tranquilizers; psychotherapy is only occasionally necessary.
Also known as Da Costa’s syndrome, this is a condition in which symptoms occur, such as palpitations and shortness of breath, which are attributed by the patient to disorder of the heart. There is no evidence, however, of heart disease, and psychological factors are thought to be of importance.
Unusual or unexpected fatigue with exertion. The fatigue is increased by mild exertion and may be more pronounced in the morning.
A psychoneurotic disorder marked by symptoms such as breathlessness, palpitations, and chest pain. It is also known as neurocirculatory asthenia, Da Costa’s syndrome, or disordered heart action (D.A.H.).
