Cresol

A strong antiseptic effective against many microorganisms and used mostly in soap solutions as a general disinfectant. It is sometimes used in low concentrations as a preservative in injections. Cresol solutions irritate the skin and if taken by mouth are corrosive and cause pain, nausea, and vomiting.


An oily liquid obtained from coal tar. It is a powerful antiseptic and disinfectant.


Yellow-brown liquid obtained from coal tar and containing not more than 5% of phenol, used as a disinfectant in a 1% to 5% solution for articles or areas that do not come in direct contact with food.


A blend of compounds derived from coal tar, often appearing as a clear, brownish, or slightly pink fluid with an odor reminiscent of carbolic acid. Primarily employed as a surgical disinfectant, it is typically found in the form of saponated cresol solution, which contains 50 percent cresol.
