A drug used in the treatment of advanced cancer of the prostate and the breast and advanced endometriosis (tissue from the lining of the uterus growing outside of the uterus). Goserelin (Zoladex) is given by injection under the skin to reduce symptoms of these advanced conditions. Goserelin is a luteinizing hormone releasing hormone (LHRH) that acts on the pituitary to decrease the release of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone. In men, the result is dramatically lowered levels of testosterone in the blood. Goserelin injections are usually given every 28 days for about 6 months.
Goserelin is a synthetic drug that shares a chemical relationship with the hypothalamic hormone gonadorelin. It is employed in the treatment of various conditions, including breast cancer, prostate cancer, fibroids, infertility, and endometriosis. However, the use of goserelin for extended periods can lead to adverse effects, such as a decrease in bone density.
