Phlebitis

Is an inflammation of a vein, usually in the legs.

Inflammation of the wall of a vein, most often occurring in the legs. Thrombosis may develop. Treatment includes rest and support of the area (e.g., by elastic stockings), nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents, and analgesics.

Inflammation of the wall of a vein, which is most commonly seen in the legs as a complication of varicose veins. A segment of vein becomes painful and tender and the surrounding skin feels hot and appears red. Thrombosis (thrombophlebitis) commonly develops. Treatment consists of elastic support together with drugs, such as phenylbutazone, to relieve the inflammation and pain. Anticoagulants are not used (compare phlebothrombosis). Phlebitis may also complicate sepsis or cancer, especially of the stomach, bronchus, or pancreas. In pancreatic cancer the phlebitis may affect a variety of veins (thrombophlebitis migrans).

Inflammation of the wall of a vein, commonly associated with thrombosis (clotting) within the vein.

The inflammation of a vein, which may be accompanied by the formation of a clot; if a clot forms, the condition is referred to as thrombophlebitis.
