Perniosis

An abnormal reaction to cold that occurs most frequently in women, children, and the elderly. Also called chilblains.

Any condition caused by cold which affects blood vessels in the skin.

Any one of a group of conditions caused by the effect of persistent cold on individuals whose skin blood vessels are especially sensitive. The small arteries constrict and the capillaries dilate, slowing the blood flow. The blood loses all its oxygen and fluid passes from the stagnant capillary blood into the tissues. The affected area becomes blue, swollen, and cold. Perniosis includes such conditions as chilblains, acrocyanosis, erythrocyanosis, and Raynaud’s disease.
