Local health department

A unit of local government which is the action arm of national and state public health agencies. It typically carries out some clinical services, environmental services, and support services. Clinical services may include, for example, dental health, occupational health, nursing, maternal and child health, family planning, communicable disease, and Women, Infants and Children’s Programs (WIC). Environmental services may include general environment, vector control, animal control, and pollution control. Support services may include, in addition to administration, vital statistics, laboratory, and health education.
