In family law, the right and duty to care for and control basic decisions regarding children who are minors or disabled adults; part of both parents’ rights and parents’ responsibilities, including provision of food, clothing, shelter, basic medical care, education, and discipline. Legal custody refers to the right to make basic decisions about a child, as regarding education and medical care; physical custody refers to where the child lives and who provides day-to-day care and control. Where both parents share a home with the children, custody is fully shared by both parents; where a single parent raises a child alone from the time of birth or adoption, that person has sole custody.
