Boards

Nickname for various kinds of admission tests. In relation to children they often refer to diagnostic assessment tests (nicknamed baby boards) or the dreaded pre-college tests offered by the College Board.


In medical specialties, a certifying body (e.g., the National Board of Medical Examiners, whose examinations must be passed for licensure in many states, or the American Board of Neurosurgery, whose examinations lead to certification in that specialty).


A term commonly used to describe examinations given by a “board” to a physician (or medical student) or other health professional. When the term “board” is used in the singular, it refers to the certifying body. Successfully passing board examinations gives specific credentials to physicians, nurses, and others.


A long, flat piece of a substance such as wood or firm plastic.
