The dietary goals of bodybuilders are often different from those of endurance or team athletes. For example, the key goal for a bodybuilder is typically to enhance the development of lean body mass and to prevent the accumulation of excess body fat for the purpose of aesthetics rather than athletic performance. While many of the principles regarding nutrition for strength, lean body mass development, and energy production for workouts apply similarly to bodybuilders and other strength-training athletes, research regarding the strategies used by bodybuilders for competition is sorely lacking. Current dietary practices for bodybuilding near the time of competition can be very extreme. These athletes should avoid engaging in any practice that can put their health at risk for either acute or chronic conditions.
