Protocollagen

Protein in the bone matrix onto which minerals are deposited. It is synthesized by the osteoblast cells and polymerized to form a triple helix. The many proline and lysine residues are hydroxylated and then glycosylated to form procollagen that is then secreted around the osteoblast cells. It is then converted to tropocollagen, which with further processing then binds the bone minerals.
