Paralytic shellfish toxins

Neurotoxins that are among the most potent of the known low-molecular weight toxins. Paralytic shellfish poisoning is attributed to the consumption of shellfish that have become contaminated with a toxin or group of toxins on the ingestion of toxic plankton, in particular, toxic dinoflagellates. The shellfish involved are pelecypods, a family of mollusks, including mussels and clams.
