Hives develop when natural chemicals including histamine are released in the skin. Most commonly, this occurs in response to an allergic reaction to a food, medication, pollen, or infections. Less frequently, hives are due to nonallergic causes such as autoimmune disease.

A popular term applied to eruptions of urticaria.
