Aerophagia

The habit of swallowing air.

Swallowing of air, usually followed by belching, flatulence, and discomfort; also called aerophagy. This may be done voluntarily to stimulate belching, accidentally during rapid eating or drinking, or unconsciously as a habit. Voluntary aerophagia is used to permit esophageal speech after surgical removal of the larynx (usually for cancer).

Ingesting air is sometimes a method people with digestive issues use to try to relieve discomfort through belching. X-ray studies show that belching can only occur after air has been swallowed and then partially expelled. This practice often results in excess air in the stomach, commonly leading to gas and associated discomfort. This condition is also known as aerophagy.
