Sulfasalazine

A drug belonging to the sulfonamide group of antibacterial drugs. It is used in the treatment of ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, and also of severe rheumatoid arthritis.


Sulfasalazine (Alzulfidine) is a sulfa drug used to treat and prevent inflammatory bowel disease, such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn disease. It works inside the bowel to reduce inflammation and other symptoms of the disease. Sulfasalazine is also used to treat rheumatoid arthritis for people who experience side effects from other arthritis drugs.

The salicylate part is now available alone in drugs such as mesalazine and olsalazine.
