Painful menstruation. Primary dysmenorrhea, intrinsic to the process of menstruation and not the result of any other disease or condition, is very common. typically, cramplike pain in the lower abdomen, sometimes accompanied by nausea, vomiting, intestinal cramps, and other discomfort begins just before or with the onset of menstrual flow. Oral contraceptives and antiprostaglandins lessen the discomfort but for some women in whom the pain is severe potent analgesics may be needed. Secondary dysmenorrhea, caused by a specific disorder (e.g., uterine tumor, pelvic infection, endometriosis), IS usually marked by pain that lasts longer and is often accompanied by bladder or bowel discomfort; treatment depends on the underlying cause.
A condition in which a woman experiences painful menstruation.
Painful or difficult menstruation. The most common type is primary (essential) dysmenorrhea, which begins with the first period and has no apparent cause. In secondary dysmenorrhea painful menstruation is experienced at some stage following the establishment of normal periods, for reasons including inflammation of the womb lining, the presence of tumors in the muscles of the womb, blockage of the blood flow, and mental disturbance.
Pain in association with menstruation. One of the most frequent gynecological disorders, it is classified as primary or secondary. An estimated 50% of menstruating women experience this disorder, and about 10% of these are incapacitated for several days during each menstrual period. This disorder is the greatest single cause of absence from school and work among menstrual-age women. In the U.S., this illness causes the loss of an estimated 140 million work hours each year.
Pain linked with menstruation that typically occurs in the lower stomach or back.
Intensely painful menstrual cycles, categorized into two primary types, often exacerbated by significant emotional elements.
