Mackerel is a name used for various species of fish found mostly in the Scombridae family. Of the different types, the more commonly known mackerel are Cero, Atlantic, King and Spanish mackerel. Mackerels are known for their slim shape, numerous finlets and oily meat. The oily meat found on mackerel is where its main health benefits derive from. This fish oil, which is also known as omega-3 fatty acid, has shown to be so beneficial, it is made into a supplement. They are found in both temperate and tropical seas, mostly living along the coast or offshore in the oceanic environment. Mackerel is one of the highly recommended oily fish for a healthy diet. The common mackerel occurs along both coasts of the North Atlantic Ocean, from North Carolina to Labrador and from Spain to Norway.
